How to Prepare Your Kids for a Family Photo Session in Louisville

The single biggest thing you can do to prepare your kids for a family photo session in Louisville is get the timing right. Book during your toddler’s best energy window – usually mid-morning or right after a nap – and arrive a few minutes early so kids can explore the space before we start. After 10+ years photographing families across Louisville and Southern Indiana, I can tell you that timing beats outfit planning every single time.

I hear some version of “I’m so sorry in advance” from almost every family who books with me. Parents arrive nervous, kids are restless, and everyone’s worried it’s going to be a disaster. But here’s what I’ve learned: kids being kids isn’t a problem. It’s actually where the best images come from. The squirming, the giggling, the moment your toddler decides they’re absolutely done and then breaks into a huge laugh anyway – those are the photos you’ll pull out in 15 years and feel something real.

Let me walk you through exactly how to set your family up for a session that feels fun, not forced.

When Should You Schedule a Family Photo Session?

Timing is the number one factor in how your kids show up to a session – more than outfits, location, or any amount of prep talk. For toddlers and preschoolers, book during their best energy window: usually mid-morning or right after an afternoon nap. A well-rested, recently-fed two-year-old is a completely different person than one who skipped their nap and hasn’t eaten since breakfast.

For school-age kids, avoid scheduling right after a packed activity day. If your son just had soccer practice followed by a birthday party, he’s running on fumes by the time we start. Build in a quiet hour beforehand if you can.

Teenagers do best in the later afternoon. Golden hour sessions at Cherokee Park or the tree-lined paths near E.P. Tom Sawyer Park work really well for that age group – the natural light feels less “posed” and more like themselves. Cristy Clauser Photography shoots family sessions across Louisville year-round, so we can find a time and location that matches your kids’ rhythms, not the other way around.

How Should You Talk to Your Kids About the Session?

Keep it simple – don’t build it up as a big, important event. When a five-year-old hears “you need to be on your best behavior for the photographer,” what they actually hear is “this is going to be stressful.” That pressure creates the exact stiffness you’re trying to avoid.

Instead, tell them you’re going to a pretty park to take some pictures and have fun. Mention that the photographer is really nice and likes to play games. For younger kids, that’s honestly all they need to know.

With teenagers, be straight with them. Let them know the session runs about 60 to 90 minutes, they’ll get some shots on their own they can post on social media, and there won’t be any awkward forced smiling. Once teens hear they’ll get individual portraits they can actually use, they get a lot more interested. I’ve seen it work hundreds of times.

What Should You Bring to a Family Photo Session?

Snacks – bring them, and make them your kids’ favorites. Goldfish crackers, fruit pouches, granola bars, whatever reliably makes your child happy. I build a short break into every family session specifically for this, because a snack break at the right moment can completely reset the energy in a group.

One thing to avoid right before we start: anything with red or orange coloring that stains around the mouth. I once had a toddler arrive fresh from a cherry popsicle and we spent the first ten minutes with wet wipes trying to get his lips back to normal. We still got great images, but his mom and I both learned something that day.

A few other things that make a real difference:

  • Water bottles for each kid – especially important during Louisville summers when everyone heats up fast
  • A comfort item for little ones – a favorite stuffed animal or blanket helps a nervous toddler feel safe in a new location
  • Avoid brand-new shoes – kids who are uncomfortable in stiff new shoes will let you know about it, loudly
  • Arrive a few minutes early – five minutes of exploring the space before we start helps kids settle in
  • Skip the bribery – promising ice cream “if you smile nice” creates a transaction instead of a genuine moment. I’d rather earn the real smiles naturally

What If My Kids Won’t Cooperate During Photos?

Here’s my honest answer: it won’t ruin anything. Managing kids of every age is literally my job, and after working with thousands of families in Louisville and Southern Indiana, I’ve built a toolkit for exactly this.

For toddlers, it’s peek-a-boo, silly sounds, and letting them explore between shots. For kids ages 5 to 10, I give them little “missions” – run to that tree and back, or have a tickle war with mom and dad. Those in-between moments produce some of the most genuine expressions you’ll ever see in a family portrait.

For reluctant kids of any age, I never force it. If someone needs a minute, we take one. Some of my best work has come from the moment right after a kid decides they’re done being grumpy and suddenly breaks into a real laugh. You can’t manufacture that – and I wouldn’t want to. Cristy Clauser Photography has photographed over a decade of Louisville family sessions, and there is genuinely nothing a child can throw at me that I haven’t seen before.

I’ve photographed sessions where a toddler had a full meltdown fifteen minutes in. We took a break, walked around, let them reset, and came back to some of the sweetest photos of the whole session. Real family life isn’t perfect. Your photos don’t have to be either.
