Common Questions I Get Asked When Booking a Maternity Photography Session

Planning your maternity photography session? As a Louisville maternity photographer with over a decade of experience, I’m sharing everything you need to know about booking your pregnancy photos!

The ideal time to schedule your session is between 28-36 weeks when your baby bump is beautifully visible but you’re still comfortable moving and posing. Book your session 2-3 months in advance to secure your preferred date, especially during busy seasons. When it comes to location, choose between stunning outdoor backdrops like fields and gardens, or the controlled lighting of a professional studio—whichever makes you feel most confident.

For wardrobe, flowy dresses that accentuate your bump photograph beautifully, and yes, your partner and children are absolutely welcome to join! Prepare by selecting outfits ahead of time, booking professional hair and makeup if desired, staying hydrated, and getting plenty of rest the night before.

Why I Love Capturing Pregnancy Photos

There’s something truly magical about photographing expecting mothers. Watching a woman embrace her changing body and the life growing inside her—it’s one of my favorite parts of this job. Over the years, I’ve had so many wonderful conversations with clients as we prepare for their sessions together. We talk timing, outfits, whether to include the kids, and all sorts of details that help make the day feel special and stress-free.

I put together this guide because so many of the same questions come up, and I figured it might help you too—whether you’re just thinking about booking or already have a date circled on your calendar. So grab a cup of tea (or whatever pregnancy craving strikes), and let’s dive in!

Finding the Perfect Timing for Your Session

When should you actually schedule maternity photos?

This is hands-down the question I hear most often! The sweet spot for most mamas falls somewhere between 29 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is gorgeously round and visible, but you’re typically not dealing with the discomfort that can come in those final weeks. That said, every pregnancy is different!

If you’re petite, you might want to aim closer to 29-30 weeks when your belly has really “popped.” Taller women sometimes prefer waiting until 32-34 weeks for a bit more bump development. The American Pregnancy Association recommends scheduling around the end of your seventh month or during the eighth month—which aligns perfectly with what I’ve found works best for my clients. Trust your instincts here. You know your body better than anyone.

How far ahead should you book?

I always recommend reaching out about 2-3 months before you want your session to happen. This is especially important during busy wedding and holiday seasons when my calendar fills up quickly. Early booking also gives us plenty of time to chat about your vision, plan your wardrobe, and scout the perfect location together. There’s nothing worse than feeling rushed when you’re trying to create something meaningful!

Choosing between outdoor locations and studio sessions

Location really comes down to what feels right for you. Some of my favorite outdoor sessions have happened in dreamy open fields, tucked among trees at golden hour, or even in clients’ own backyards where they feel most at home. Natural light creates this soft, romantic quality that’s hard to replicate. If you’re curious about specific spots around here, I’ve written a whole guide on the best outdoor maternity photography locations in Louisville.

That said, Kentucky weather can be unpredictable. A studio session gives us complete control over lighting and temperature—no worrying about sudden rain or sweltering humidity. Plus, we can create a variety of looks with different backdrops and props. Many of my clients end up doing a combination of both!

Getting Ready for Your Pregnancy Portraits

What should you wear to look and feel amazing?

Wardrobe can make or break your maternity images, so let’s talk strategy. Long, flowy dresses are absolute magic for pregnancy photos—they drape beautifully over your bump and create movement in the images. Solid colors or subtle patterns tend to photograph better than busy prints, which can distract from the main event: you and that beautiful belly!

When you schedule a call with me, I’ll send over a detailed wardrobe guide with specific suggestions. I’ve also built up a client wardrobe over the years, so if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the thought of shopping while pregnant (totally understandable!), we can work together to find something perfect.

Can your partner and kids join the session?

Absolutely! Some of my most cherished images feature the whole family gathered around mama’s belly. There’s something incredibly sweet about capturing a toddler kissing the bump or a partner’s hands cradling the belly alongside mom’s. These photos become even more special once baby arrives and your older children can see how excited everyone was waiting for them.

Of course, solo shots focusing just on you are equally stunning. Most mamas want a mix of both—some intimate portraits and some family images that show everyone’s excitement. We’ll create a shot list together based on what matters most to you.

Preparation tips that actually make a difference

The night before your session, get as much rest as possible. I know, I know—sleeping while pregnant is its own challenge! But showing up refreshed makes such a difference in how you look and feel. On the day of:

  • Hydrate like it’s your job—water gives your skin that gorgeous pregnancy glow
  • Eat something nourishing so your energy stays up throughout the session
  • Have your outfits steamed and ready to avoid last-minute stress
  • Consider professional hair and makeup—it’s a lovely way to pamper yourself and ensures you feel camera-ready

When you’re relaxed and well-prepared, it shows in every single frame. You’ll actually enjoy the experience rather than just surviving it!

Questions I Hear All the Time

Do you have experience with maternity photography?

I’ve been capturing maternity sessions for over a decade now! What started as photographing friends and family has grown into something I’m deeply passionate about. Check out my maternity gallery to see examples of my work and get a feel for my style.

What does your editing style look like?

I aim for soft, timeless, and natural. My editing enhances your natural pregnancy glow without making images look overly processed or trendy. The goal is creating photographs you’ll still love looking at in twenty years—not something that screams “2025 Instagram filter.” I want you to see yourself in these images, just the most beautiful, luminous version of yourself.

How do you handle kids during the session?

Honestly? I love it. Kids bring an energy and spontaneity to sessions that you just can’t plan. Yes, sometimes toddlers have meltdowns or refuse to look at the camera. That’s real life! I’ve been doing this long enough to know how to work with little ones, engage them with games and silliness, and capture those genuine moments of connection. Some of my favorite shots happen in between the “official” poses.

My Final Thoughts

Pregnancy goes by so fast—even when it doesn’t feel that way in the moment. Before you know it, you’ll be holding that baby in your arms and wondering where the time went. A maternity photography session is your chance to pause, celebrate your body, and document this incredible transformation you’re going through.

I’d love to hear your vision and help you create something beautiful. Head over to my contact page to reach out, or if you want to learn more about me first, feel free to check out my about page. Frequently Asked Questions About Maternity Sessions

When is the best time to schedule maternity photos?

The ideal window is between 28-36 weeks of pregnancy, with 29-34 weeks being the sweet spot for most women. Your bump will be beautifully visible, but you’ll likely still be comfortable enough to move around and pose without difficulty.

How far in advance should I book my maternity session?

I recommend booking 2-3 months ahead of when you’d like to have your session. This ensures you get your preferred date and gives us time to plan wardrobe, location, and all the details together.

What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot?

Long, flowy dresses in solid colors work beautifully for maternity photos. Fitted bodysuits and form-fitting dresses also look gorgeous. I provide a detailed wardrobe guide and have a client closet available if you’d prefer to choose from curated options.

Can my spouse and children be included in the photos?

Absolutely! Including your partner and other children creates meaningful family portraits that celebrate everyone’s excitement about the new arrival. Most clients do a combination of solo shots and family images.

Should I choose an outdoor location or studio session?

This depends on your personal style and the look you’re going for. Outdoor sessions offer natural light and beautiful backdrops like fields and gardens, while studio sessions provide controlled lighting and weather-proof comfort. Many clients opt for a combination of both.

How should I prepare for my maternity session?

Get plenty of rest the night before, stay hydrated, eat nourishing food on the day of your session, and have your wardrobe selections ready. Consider booking professional hair and makeup to help you feel extra pampered and confident.

What if I go into labor before my scheduled session?

This is exactly why I recommend scheduling between 28-36 weeks rather than waiting until the very end. If your baby does arrive early, we can discuss options like applying your deposit toward a newborn session instead.
